Mrs. E.S. Buffum Dies In California, Hold Rites Here.
Mrs. E.S. Buffum, for many years a resident of Toulon and Goshen townships, and for the past several years a resident of Long Beach, California, died at her home at 1085 Atlantic Street, Long Beach, California, Saturday evening, November 6, following a long illness. Toulon relatives received news of her death in a telegram which reached here late that evening.
The body will be brought to Toulon and services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Toulon Baptist church, of which Mrs. Buffum was a member. Reverend Ray Starr, pastor of the church, will be in charge of services.
Born in Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Buffum was born in Troy, Bradford county, Pennsylvania, in Feburary 1843. She was a daughter of Charles and Laura Himes, who were among the pioneer settlers of Stark county. When a child of three years, she came with her parents to Illinois, making the trip in a covered wagon. Six families made up the party and among them were Louis Fitch and family, Nelson Fitch and family and Tyrus Himes and family.
She was united in marriage to Emery S. Buffum, 17 May 1864, at the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in Toulon by Reverend Price, who was at that time pastor of the church. They at once began housekeeping on a farm two miles east of Altona. In November of that year, after Mr. Buffum waited to cast a vote for Lincoln, they moved to a farm, owned by Mrs. Buffum's father, Charles Himes, north of LaFayette. In March 1886, they moved to the farm owned later for many years by Luman Himes and resided there for two years. In May 1867, they moved to the northwest quarter of section 7, in Goshen township, where they lived for 43 years, taking up their residence in Toulon in 1901. James Thompson, long a resident of LaFayette, built the house on the farm for them.
To Mr. and Mrs. Buffum were born eleven children, as follows: Charles A., of Long Beach, California; Edwin E., of Long Beach; Homer H., of Toulon; George N. who passed away near Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, 16 October 1924; Perry H., of Hayfield, Minnesota; Roy L, of Long Beach; Laura L., wife of Simeon Dunbar, of Casey, Iowa; Clara L., wife of Fred P. Janes, of Hayfield, Minnesota; and A. May of Long Beach. Two died in infancy, Alberta, at the age of 12 years, and Nellie E. at the age of 10 years.
Celebrate Golden Wedding.
On 16 May 1914, Mr. and Mrs. Buffum held open house at their residence in Toulon in honor of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The event was held one day before their actual wedding day on account of the 17th falling on Sunday. Over one hundred friends gathered at their home in Toulon on that occasion.
Attended Historic Meetings.
In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Buffum attended the Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia and they also attended the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition held in St. Louis and the Exposition held in Portland, Oregon. For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Buffum spent their winters in California with their sons and in 1916 they moved to Long Beach.
Following a general decline of nearly two yeas, Mr. Buffum died at his home at 1085 Atlantic Street, Long Beach, California on 5 January 1925. Had he lived two days longer, he would have attained his 83rd year.
Mrs. Buffum 84 years old.
Mrs. Buffum died Saturday night, November 6, 1926. She was in her 84th year and had been in a helpless condition for the past three years. Blindness came upon her six years ago and other infirmities soon followed.

Aged Pioneer Laid To Rest In Toulon Cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. E.S. Buffum, for many years a resident of Toulon, were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Toulon Baptist church. Reverend Ray Starr being in charge of the services. Mrs. Buffum died at her late home in Long Beach, California, Saturday, November 6, following a long illness.
The song service was given by Mrs. E.H. Lloyd and Mrs. George Brace who sang three selections, as follows: "Gathering Home, One by One," "It is Well With My Soul", and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought". Leslie Claybaugh accompanied the singers at the organ.
The body bearers were Messrs. C.W. Bocock, J.H. Wrigley, E.B. Redfield, F.E. Cole, H.W. Walker, W.F. Price.
Interment was in the Toulon Cemetery.
Among those from out of town who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Simeon Dunbar, of Casey, Iowa; Mrs. Fred Janes and Perry Buffum, of Hayfiled, Minnesota; Mrs. May Nicolson, of Long Beach, California; H.H. Himes, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nichols, Mrs. Wiley, Mrs. Frank Lupfer, all of Galva; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Janes, Mr. and Mrs. Dana Janes, of LaFayette, and Fred Winans, of Kewanee.
