He had eight siblings: Horace (died as a baby), Anna (died at age 16), Jennet (married Gurdon Edgerton), Peggy (died at age 4), Allen (married Elizabeth Sellew), George (married Catherine Newton Prudden), John Terry (married Sarah Maria Blodgett) and Margaret (married Leonard Billings).
On 24 November 1817, in Colrain, Massachusetts, Horace married Rowena Taylor Edson, daughter of Rev. Jesse Edson and Rebecca (Taylor) Edson of Halifax, Vermont. At age 46, Rowena died on 23 October 1844 in Rockville, CT and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
Horace and Rowena had five children:
1. Jesse Edson Thompson (born 20 January 1820 in Ellington, CT). On 5 November 1843, in Montpelier, VT, Jesse married Laura Abbott, daughter of Nathan and Susan (Pease) Abbott. They had one daughter Ella Susan Thompson (born 29 September 1846, married Franklin Crandal Pease). Jesse Edson Thompson died on 27 January 1898 in Greenfield, MA, age 78.
2. Anne Rebecca Thompson (born 30 April 1821 in Colrain, MA). On 14 October 1840, in Rockville, CT, Anne married Lucius Brett, son of William Brett. They had three children all born in Rockville, CT: Harriet Anne Brett (born 17 December 1841, married Arthur St. Clair Wright), Rowena Lovina Brett (born 7 June 1847, died 2 October 1868, Rockville, CT) and Almira Letitia Brett (born 3 October 1856, married John S. Lancashire). Anne Rebecca (Thompson) Brett died on 28 February 1903, in Moline, Illinois, age 81.
3. Jane Amanda Thompson (born 30 October 1823 in Colrain, MA). She died on 3 February 1824 in Colrain.
4. Horace Allen Thompson (born 28 July 1825, Readsboro, VT). He died unmarried in Hartford, CT on 19 Jan 1911, age 86.
5. George Terry Thompson (born 24 May 1829). On 1 October 1851, he married Christiana Almira Noble in Rockville, CT. They had one son George Austin Thompson, born on 15 January 1855 in Elmwood, IL. Christina died on 19 November 1882 in Waterbury, CT. On 8 April 1885, George married Henrietta M. Wickham. He died on 22 September 1903, in Huntington, Florida, at the age of 74 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Waterbury, CT.
On 5 January 1845, Horace married Mrs. Lovina (Moody) Lord and they had one daughter Idella Roselle Thompson, born 14 December 1846. Idella died unmarried at age 76 in Coventry, CT and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Rockville, CT.
Horace died on 11 February 1862, in Coventry, Connecticut, at the age of 70, and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Rockville, Connecticut.
