James Thompson, son of John and Bilhah (Terry) Thomson, was born 10 September 1763, in East Windsor, Connecticut. His father, John, was the son of James and Jennet (Scott) Thomson. His mother, Bilhah was the daughter of Isaac and Margaret (Downing) Terry.

James had five siblings all born in East Windsor:
i. Miriam, born about 1763, married Benjamin Allen, son of Joseph and Lois (Burnham) Allen, and James' brother-in-law. They had seven children: Bilhah, Ann, Anna, Thompson, James, Isaac and William Burnham. Miriam died 5 July 1827, in East Windsor.
ii. Joseph (25 February 1768 - 1 October 1776).
iii. Isaac (18 June 1770 - 28 September 1776).
iv. Jennet (20 August 1772 - 27 September 1776).
v. Margaret (20 March 1775 - 9 October 1776).

In 1776, when James was age 13, his mother Bilhah and his four youngest siblings died.

His father, John married Hannah Terry and they had three children:
vi & vii. Twins Isaac and Jennet died at 14 days (31 July 1782 - 14 August 1782).
viii. Sarah died at 11 months 23 days(5 June 1784 - 28 May 1785).

On 25 February 1789, in East Windsor, CT, James married Anna Allen, daughter of Joseph and Lois (Burnham) Allen. They had nine children:
1. Horace Thompson born and died in East Windsor (25 September 1789 - 6 May 1790).
2. Horace Thompson, born 1 June 1791 in East Windsor. On 24 November 1847, he married Rowena Taylor Edson and they had three sons (Jesse Edson Thompson, Horace Allen Thompson & George Terry Thompson) and two daughters (Ann Rebecca Thompson & Jane Amanda Thompson). On 5 January 1845, Horace married widower Mrs. Lovina (Moody) Lord and they had daughter Idella Roselle Thompson.
3. Anna Thompson died at age 16 (9 August 1793 - 8 July 1810).
4. Jennet Thompson, born 4 December 1795 in Hadley, MA. On 6 Dec 1841, she married Gurdon Edgerton, son of Elisha and Eunice (Peck) Edgerton. They didn’t have any children. Previously, in 1820, Gurdon married Cynthia Porter and they had at least three children.
5. Peggy Thompson, born 11 November 1797 in Hadley, MA. She died at age 4, on 18 September 1802 in Rockville, CT.
6. Allen Thompson, born 3 June 1880 in East Windsor, CT. He married Elizabeth Sellew in in Hartford. She was born in Glastonbury, CT in 1800. They had three children: Charles Thompson (died young), Jane Thompson (died at age 16) and Lucretia Matilda Thompson (born 8 December 1831, married Jared Daniels). Lucretia and Jared had three children: Mary Ella Thompson (died at age 55, unmarried), Hattie Thompson (died at age 4) and Allie Deetta Thompson (died at age 17).
7. George Thompson, born 13 July 1802 in East Windsor, CT. On 9 October 1834, in Enfield, he married Catherine Newton Prudden, daughter of Fletcher and Anna (Parsons) Prudden. They had three children: Newton Prudden Thompson, Charles Parsons Thompson and Fletcher Allen Thompson.
8. John Terry Thompson, born 10 April 1805 in East Windsor, CT. On 6 January 1831, he married Sarah Maria Blodgett, daughter of Phineas and Sarah (Reed) Blodgett. They had two sons: Lucius Edwin Thompson and Charles Edward Thompson.
9. Margaret Thompson (born 22 April 1808 in East Windsor, CT). On 14 April 1836, she married Leonard Billings, son of Solomon and Chloe (Coy) Billings. On 23 July 1851, Margaret died at age 43. On 12 December 1855, Leonard married Frances Amelia Killam.

At age 78, James died on 5 June 1842, in Coventry, Connecticut and was buried in North Coventry Cemetery.
