Civil War Union Brigader General. As an engineer before the Civil war he helped lay out plans for Central Park. He also contructed the dry docks at the Brooklyn Nay Yard in 1857. At the outbreak of the war he and 400 other navy yard worker enlisted in Dan Sickles "Excelsior Brigade". He was successively appointed major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel of the 74th New York Infantry. With this unit he saw service during the Peninsula Campaign. Bad health forced his retirement from the field for a time and was employed as a recruiter for almost a year. He was promoted to Brigadier General unpon his return to the field in March 1863. During the Battle of Gettysburg he was severely wounded on July 2, 1863 and captured by the Confederates. He was exchanged in September and in November was assigned to command the army gunboats of Butler's Army of the James. He was Breveted Major General in 1865 and resumed civil engineering in New York. He held the following posts after the war: Chief Engineer of the Dept. of Docks 1873-75, Surveyor of the Port of New York 1878-83, and Naval Officer of the Port of New York until 1885.
