Martha was the daughter of William Beatty Ruby and his first wife Susanna Landis. Susanna died in Aug 1835, probably in Holmes County, Ohio.

Martha married Jacob Frye in 1853 in Madison County, Iowa. By 1875, they had moved to Kansas and settled near Great Bend. Jacob and Martha divorced before 1900.

Martha is the great grandmother of astronaut Scott Carpenter.
