Lanier's Independent Batt'n, Ohio Militia(War of 1812)
The name of John Helvy, a private in Capt. John Williams' Company of Riflemen, Odd Battalion, Ohio Militia, commanded by Major Alexander C. Lanier, appears on the company muster roll for August 25, 1813 to January 4, 1814.
The name of John Helvy appears on the payroll of the above-mentioned company. Term of service charged was 4 months and 11 days, for which he was paid $8.00 per month, for a total of $34.87.

BOUNTY LAND-
Act of Congress, September 28, 1850.
Application of John Helvie of Cass County, Indiana, for bounty land was filed on December 14, 1850 by Charles B. Lasselle, his attorney, of Logansport, Indiana.
Applicant, who was 70 years of age, stated that he "was a private in the company of Light Infantry under the command of Captain John Williams in (as he believes to the best of his recollection) the First Regiment of Ohio Militia, under the command of Col. Ewing, in the war with the Indians north-west of the river Ohio in the year 1811-12; that he volunteered in the county of Miami in the state of Ohio on or about the 20th day of August 1812, for the term of 6 months; that he continued in actual service in said war for the term of about 4 months and 4 days and that he was honorably discharged in the said county of Miami and state of Ohio on the 24th day of December , AD 1812, as will appear by the muster roll of said company---he having never received a written certificate of discharge." Application carries the signature of John Helvie. An 80-acre tract of land was granted under Land Warrant No. 17592, filed in Logansport, Indiana in Vol. 63, page 236.
Act of Congress, March 3, 1855.
Application of John Helvie, aged 75, of Cass County, Indiana for bounty land, filed on June 8, 1855 by Charles B. Lasselle of Logansport. Applicant again states his military service and that he received a bounty land warrant no. 17592 for 80-acres of land under the Act of Congress, September 28, 1850 which he has since legally disposed of and cannot return.
Witnesses to application were Thomas B. McElheney and Elon Wade of Logansport. An 80-acre tract of land was granted under Land Warrant No. 25360.
Another application dated November 30, 1860, for bounty land under the Act of Congress, March 3, 1855, was filed by John Helvie, aged 81, residing in Miami County, Ohio. This application was written by Charles H.Culbertson, an attorney in Troy, Ohio. Witness to said application were Robert H.
Culbertson and W. S. Covault. No record of any land having been received from this application.
