Retired Educator and Principal. Son of Franklin Pierce and Mary Gruesilla (Clingan) Weller. Married Leota Belle Bucher on 9 Aug 1910 in Clark County, OH. Father of William Franklin b. 15 Apr 1912 and Merrill Bucher b. 28 Mar 1915.

EDGAR G. WELLER, EDUCATOR FOR 50 YEARS, TO RETIRE
Edgar G. Weller, principal of Roosevelt Junior High School, announced Sunday he will retire from the educational field at the end of this school year, when he will finish his 50th year in the profession.
The Springfield Board of Education has accepted his resignation, but "with regrets." The board sent Mr. Weller a letter expressing its official appreciation of his service.
The most exciting year of all the 50 years was in 1913, according to Mr. Weller. During that year he was principal at the Olive Branch School.
"One morning I was in the laboratory doing some physics when I saw smoke coming under the door. I ran outside and the building was on fire."
The building was destroyed. No one was hurt in the fire, caused by an overheated furnace. Students had to find a new place to hold classes.
"That surely was the most exciting time of my career," Mr. Weller said. "Not only the fire, but teaching for the rest of the year, too."
He explained that in those days, children often drove horses and buggies to school. Stables were provided at Olive Branch to quarter the horses while their drivers were in class.
"After the fire," Mr. Weller said, "the horses were put in one end of the old barn, and the students were taught in the other. We put together a couple of classrooms and held school the rest of the year like that."
Mr. Weller was born in London, O., but went to school in Urbana. Before he was out of high school, he began teaching in the Champaign County schools system. After six years, he was appointed superintendent of the North Hampton School, in Clark County, where he stayed for a year.
That year was the beginning of an unbroken string of executive teaching positions, either as principal or superintendent.
From North Hampton he went to Hollansburg, where he again was superintendent, and from there he went to Olive Branch.
He taught in only one other school before coming to the Springfield system in 1917. That was in South Ward School in Urbana, where he was principal.
Mr. Weller came to Springfield as a principal and has been a principal ever since. His first assignment here was in Lincoln School. Then he was transferred to Northern, opened the new Snyder Park Junior High School and then was given the principalship of the new Roosevelt Junior High School, which was opened at Christmas of 1924. He has been there since.
He obtained both a Bachelor's Degree from Wittenberg College and a Master's Degree from Columbia University entirely by summer and Saturday school work. It took him four summers to obtain the Master's. Meanwhile, he taught during school terms.
Besides his school work, he has filled the position of treasurer of the Springfield Public Schools Credit Union since it began about 10 years ago. He is active in church work, being a member of the board of trustees at Central Methodist Church and formerly superintendent of the Sunday School. He is a life member of the National Education Association and of the National Congress of Parents and Teacher. He is secretary-treasurer of the Springfield District Chamber of Credit Unions. He also is a member of the Ohio Education Association.
Mr. Weller has been particularly active in the Congress of Parents and Teachers. Before the war he had been chairman of parent-teacher courses on both the state and national level.
An idea he helped institute, the courses are taught to officers and committee members of local parent-teacher associations. For years before World War II, Mr. Weller and H. S. McCoy, principal of Snyder Park Junior High School, taught Springfield courses one night a week.
Mr. Weller also instructed teachers in various university summer sessions so that they in turn could conduct similar courses. The instruction was on a national level.
Mr. Weller has been married since 1910 and lives with his wife at 1615 Woodward av. He has two sons, W. F. Weller, principal at Fulton School, and Merrill B. Weller, department manager for the International Harvester Co. He has eight grandchildren.

FIRST ROOSEVELT PRINCIPAL DIES
Edgar G. Weller, 91, formerly of 1615 Woodward av., died at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday in the Rebekah Hospital following three years of failing health. Mr. Weller was a retired educator, having taught 50 years in and around the Springfield area.
Mr. Weller began teaching in the Champaign County school system, subsequently serving in teaching and supervisory capacities at North Hampton School, Hollansburg School, Olive Branch, South Ward School in Urbana, Lincoln School, and Snyder Park Junior High School.
Mr. Weller was the first principal of Roosevelt Junior High School. The school opened in 1924, and he served as its principal until 1952.
He obtained a bachelor's degree from Wittenberg University entirely by summer and Saturday school work.
He was active in church work and was a member of the board of trustees at Central United Methodist church, and was at one time superintendent of the Sunday School.
Mr. Weller was a life member of the National Education Association and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.
He was born March[November] 10, 1883, in London, Ohio, the son of Franklin Pierce and Mary G. [Clingan] Weller.
Survivors include two sons, William F. and Merrill B., both of Springfield; one sister, Miss Flora Weller of Urbana; a brother, DeWitt of Urbana, and two nieces.
His body was taken to the Littleton Funeral Home where friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Services will be held in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday in charge of the Rev. B. A. Middleton. Burial will be in New Carlisle Cemetery.
