Frank Townsend Holmes was born at Cape May, New Jersey, July 7th, 1837, where he grew up and was educated.

In 1855 he came west to Sangamon county, Illinois, where he remained until 1858, when he went overland to Colorado, and worked in the Pikes Peak gold mine. The Civil war coming on while he was in the west he enlisted in 1861. In Co. F., first Colorado Cavalry, and served faithfully until October, 1864.

In 1866 he came back to Marion county, Iowa, and on November 7, 1867, was united in marriage to Hannah A. Dove. To this union were born eight children, two of whom preceded him to the better land, Ida May and Ray. The surviving children left to comfort their aged mother are Mrs. Mary Mick, Mrs. Anna Terpstra, Mrs. Lottie Woods, Charley Holmes, Roy Holmes, and Mrs. Maude Sparks. Besides these he leaves an aged brother, Philip Holmes of Salem, Mass.

About twenty-five years ago he united with the Methodist church of Galesburg and ever afterward lived a consistent christian life.

He was a kind husband and a loving father. He departed this life March 19th, 1913, aged 75 years, 8 months, 12 days. The funeral services were held in the Galesburg M.E. church at 11 o'clock, March 23rd, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.C. Fitzsimmons. Interment was in the Hewitt cemetery.
