John G. Tuma, a long time resident of Cotesfield, Nebraska, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 14, 1951, in a hospital in Omaha, having submitted to surgery only two weeks ago. He was 84 years old.

John G. Tuma was born May 16, 1868, in House #9, Dohnalova Lhota, Sedlcany District, Czech Republic, to Jan (John) and Anna (Kriz Pesak). Jan Tuma was born in 1837 in House #3 in Janov, Sedlcany District, Czech Republic (and his father Matej Tuma [Jr.] was born in 1806, married in 1828 and lived, and Matej’s father Matej [Sr.] was born in 1762, married in 1787 and lived—all in House #3 in Janov).
John G. Tuma came with his parents, the late Jan and Anna Tuma, to the United States, with his four siblings when but a very small child. They arrived in New York City on July 16, 1867 and settled in Wisconsin until 1871 when they moved to Omaha for a six tears before coming to a farm near Cotesfield in 1877. It was in this community that he grew to manhood and met and married Miss Katie Spilinek. They were married on May 24, 1890, in Elba, Nebraska. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1940.

On August 17, 1943, Mrs. Tuma passed away and since that time Mr. Tuma has made his home with his children, chiefly Clarence. He was also preceded in death by four children, two in infancy, Ralph at 11 years and George.
Mr. Tuma was a likeable, kind and good neighbor and father. Fishing was his favorite sport and one that he enjoyed up to the time of his passing.
Surviving him are his children: Mrs. Lucy Vlach, Adam and Clarence, all of Cotesfield, Nebraska; Mrs. Agnes King of Grand Island, Nebraska; Mrs. Helen Horky of Ravenna, Nebraska: John A. of Herman, Nebraska; Phillip and Mrs. Josie Hughes of Scotia, Nebraska; Mrs. Kathryn Lukesh of Port Townsend, Wash and Cecil of Lincoln, Nebraska; 17 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, April 17, 1:00 p.m at the Keating Mortuary, St. Paul, Nebraska, and 2:00 pm. Cotesfield Ev. United Brethren church, Rev. Robert L Holbrook officiated. Mrs. A. K Coombs, Mrs. Harry DeLand and Mrs. Lea Wolinski of Elba, sang, "Ivory Palaces," "Beyond the Sunset," and "Whispering Hope." Mrs. Erving Hanzel accompanied and played the processional and recessional. Serving as pallbearers were: Paul Coufal, Henry Halla, Richard Spilinek, Louie Spilinek, Ted Tuma and John W. Tuma. Burial was in the family lot in the Cotesfield Cemetery. Mrs. Lester Gress had charge of the flowers assisted by Mrs. Rudolph Bebernis, Mrs. Bud Donscheski, and Mrs. Wilbur Leth.
