PASSING OF AN OLD RESIDENT

Thomas Preston Died Late Saturday Night, Leaving an Unusually Large Family - The Funeral

Caledonia's patriarchs are passing over to the Other Shore. Another one embarked for that clime at 11:34 p.m. Saturday, when Thomas Preston passed away at his home on West Main St. He was laid to rest yesterday afternoon in the Mumford Rural Cemetery, after funeral services at his late home at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. Preston had been in failing health for two years or more, the breaking down incident to old age making him a great sufferer at times. A fall ten days or so ago undoubtedly hastened his death. He passed away surrounded by his loving family, secure in the hope of a better life beyond this world's doubts and fears.

Thomas Preston was born in Longford Co., Ireland, in 1824, his father, an Englishman, having gone to that island to escape religious persecution. Here he was married in 1846, to Maria Connor, who has been his helpmeet all the years since and who mourns him now. In 1852, he came to America, Caledonia, then Canada, and soon again Caledonia claimed him as an adopted son. His wife joined him a little later.

For some thirty years Mr. Preston was head sawyer for the late John McKay at his saw mill at the headwaters of Spring Creek. Later he was engaged in various lines of work, giving up any active occupation several years ago. He was one of those old country careful workmen whose work was always well done, whatever he undertook.

It is related of him that he would take one of the saws he was using on his back and walk to Rochester, have the saw gummed, and walk back the same day, so strong and healthy was he.

Some forty years ago he and his wife became members of the United Presbyterian Church, under the pastorate of Rev. D. F. Bonner, D.D. and both were most faithful in attendance and interest so ling as their strength permitted their attendance. He was a Republican in political belief.

To them it was given to raise a remarkably large family - eleven children, all of whom are living. Seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren look back to them with regard and love. In 1896, they celebrated their golden wedding. The children, in order of their ages are: Mrs. DeForest Emerson and Miss Sarah Preston of Caledonia, Thomas Preston, Jr. of Batavia, Miss Dora Preston and Mrs. William Johnston of Caledonia, Mrs. Mark Wilcox of Leroy, Mrs. R. Reid of Caledonia, Mrs. Thomas Moore of Allegan, Michigan, Robert Preston of Gloversville, N. Y., William Preston of Caledonia, Dr. John C. Preston of Avon.

It is a pleasure to pay tribute to such a man for Mr. Preston was universally respected and trusted by all who knew him and especially loved by his large family. He was a good, kind father, a Christian man of the purest type, one whose influence for good has not yet ceased. The family may well look back on his 86 years of busy life.

The simple funeral service at his late home yesterday was very largely attended, a long procession of carriages followed his remains to Mumford. Rev. Clarence J. Williamson, his pastor, spoke feelingly of the mystery of death, holding our departed loved ones where really nearer us in spirit than ever before. As the dead requested his four sons , Thomas, William, Robert, and Dr. John C., and two sons-in-law, DeForest Emerson and William Johnston acted as bearers.
