It had business property on both the east and west sides of the Muskingum River and also operated a river dredge there. The company was the predecessor to Smith Concrete that later moved to Reno. The Smith family sold the company in 1971.

They had two sons, Howard Dewey "H.D." and Clarence. All share Oak Grove Cemetery.
H.D. had one son, Richard. Clarence had no children.
