Funeral services for Mrs. Bernice Bogan Traylor, 91, of West Monroe (formerly of Columbia) were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 1997 from the First United Methodist Church in Columbia with Rev. Dave Sheehan and Rev. Minns Robertson officiating. Interment followed in the Columbia Hill Cemetery under direction of Riser & Son Funeral Home of Columbia.

Mrs. Traylor, the daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Scholfield and Virginia Whatley Bogan, was born on October 12, 1905 in Chute, Louisiana and died Sunday, March 23, 1997 at the Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe.

She was reared in the Methodist Church parsonages in Louisiana communities where her father served, including Jackson, Sicily Island, Bernice, Colfax, and Columbia.

She graduated from high school in Columbia and married John Hardy Traylor, Sr. in 1924. To that loving union five children were born.

Mrs. Traylor graduated from beauty school in 1939 and operated her shop in Columbia until she was appointed to serve on the Louisiana State Cosmetic Board under the administration of Governors Robert Kennon, Jimmy Davis, and John McKeithen before her retirement in 1972.

She was a devoted member of the Columbia First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was also the leader of the Caldwell Parish Jail Ministry.

Mrs. Traylor resided in Columbia until 1990 when she moved to West Monroe. She was a beautiful person known for her love and faith. She loved people and had a gracious, thankful heart. Her family expresses gratitude to her many friends and praises to God in Christ for taking her to be with Him.

Survivors include: her four children, Bunkie Stotts of Brownwood, Texas; Rev. Dr. John H. Traylor, Jr. of Monroe, Judge Charles A. Traylor, Jr. of Monroe, and Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Chet D. Traylor of Winnsboro; her brother, James Bogan of Destin, Florida; her sisters, Ruth Schultz and Geneva Pringle, both of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1950 and by their second child, Virginia Elizabeth (Betty) Harris.

Pallbearers were: Charles Thompson, Jeff Warner, Gary Mott, Charles A. Traylor III, John S. Traylor, Nathan S. Traylor, Arvil Jeffery Harris, and Charles Denva Harris.

Honorary pallbearers were Jim Sherman and Paul Meredith.

Any planned memorial may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Columbia or to the Caldwell Parish Prison Ministry.
