In his 62 years of priestly ministry, Msgr. Francis G. Boeshans exemplified the mandate to live "not to be served but to serve." He was Consultor for two archbishops-Archbishop Hannan and Archbishop Schulte, plus, in the beginning of Father's priesthood, Archbishop Rummel appointed him assistant CCD director of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, serving under then Msgr. Gerald Frey. During that tenure, he directed the Junior Newman Clubs of the entire Archdiocese, until the program was discontinued in 1962 by Archbishop Cody.
Msgr. Boeshans also served as Archdiocesan Director of the Council of Catholic Women, and as Archdiocesan CYO Director, during which time he was awarded the prestigious Ray Mock Service Award for outstanding service to youth. In addition, he was an active member of the Clergy Council for over 20 years, Procurator on the Matrimonial Court, Chaplain for KC Councils, and Catholic hospital chaplain for Methodist Hospital for ten years. Under Archbishop Hannan, Msgr. Boeshans worked diligently to fund the Horizons program, which provided diocesan-wide residences such as Nazareth Inn and Madonna Manor for the elderly. In the mid-1980s, Msgr. was host/moderator of Real-to Reel, a weekly television program for WLAE. This program highlighted notable personalities-local, national and international-in the Church.
During his retirement, Msgr. Boeshans was anything but retired, having helped at over 30 parishes in Louisiana and Mississippi, with most of his help at St. Anthony in Gretna and St. Benilde in Metairie. He loved to preach missions and days of recollection and had the privilege of preaching in four states-Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and North Carolina. In addition to parish days of recollection, Father went to Rosaryville in Ponchatoula, Louisiana several times a year for retreats and days of recollection. Msgr. Boeshans lived a life of service to God and his fellow man, truly exemplifying the commission of his ordination to be an "alter Christus"-another Christ to the world.
Msgr. Boeshans is survived by one brother, David I. Boeshans (wife Barbara) of Marietta, GA, and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his aforementioned parents, two aunts, Agnes Boeshans (Mrs. Archibald) Lejeune (1902-1978) and Beatrice Boeshans (Mrs. Ralph) Gutierrez (1906-2002) and two sisters, Mary Louise Boeshans-Minshew (Mrs. Fred J. Minshew) of River Ridge, LA and Doris Ann Boeshans-Owen (Mrs. Paul Dixon Owen, Jr.) of Greensboro, NC. Others mourning his passing are half-cousins from his grandmother's first marriage, the Ruppert, Meals, Rybiski, Brown, Jensen and Guidry families.
