"DeWitt C. Tirrill Dies At Madison Home of Daughter," Lodi (Wisconsin) Enterprise, 19 May 1927, page 1, column 4.

DeWitt C. Tirrill, long a resident of Lodi and vicinity, passed away Saturday, May 14th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul Rosen, Madison. Mr. Tirrill has been ill since November, combatting [sic] a severe case of blood poison and complications.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Simons funeral parlors here, the Rev. E. J. Jeffrey officiating. He was buried at Mt. Pleasant cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away Jan. 3, 1926.

Mr. Tirrill was born Feb. 23, 1846, at Colbrook [sic], N. H., the son of Timothy and Mary Tirrill. The family came West in 1849 and settled in West Point on the farm now owned by John Mahlke. Living on the farm as a boy, Mr. Tirrill gave up farm life and became a contractor. The State Bank building, and many of the early modern homes here, including the Dick and Job Mills houses, the row of Pruyn houses on Main street, and the late Frank H. Simons place, were all built by him.

Mr. Tirrill was married to Mathilda Riddle on July 21, 1875. Three children were born to them; Ethel (Mrs. Paul Rosen), Madison; Edward, San Ysidro, Calif.; Marie (Mrs. Osmand Jorstad), Pittsburg, Pa.

About 16 years ago when his health began to fail, Mr. and Mrs. Tirrill went to Florida and lived for 10 years at Zephyr Hills. On their return to Wisconsin they made their home with their daughter, Ethel, at Madison.

Besides his children, Mr. Tirrill leaves an older brother, Frank, and a sister, younger, Mrs. Mary Shumway, both of Lodi. A brother in Iowa who was past 90 died in October, 1926, and on the same day the oldest living sister passed away. This means that three members of the family have passed on in seven months.

DeWitt Tirrill was one of three brothers who celebrated his Golden Wedding anniversary before the family circle was broken. In the days when the Universalist church was active here, Mr. Tirrill was a member.

Attending the funeral from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rosen, Herman Rosen and family, Everett Johnson, Maurice Wills with his wife and mother, all of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Gottschall, Baraboo.
