According to payroll of Civil War records he was in the hospital in Macon, MS., also was on muster roll in Smithville, MS. on August 31, 1863. His brother Nathaniel Monroe Esteswas also killed in the Civil War. Another brother Elias Cooper Estes survived to return home.
