John Backes Dies Thursday At Age Of 69 After Month's Illness
Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:00 o'clock at the home and at 2:00 o'clock at the Immanuel Lutheran church for John Backes, prominent pioneer of the Dresden vicinity, who passed away Thursday, September 18, 1941, after an illness of four weeks. His age was 69.
Rev. A. T. Kellermann was in charge of services and burial was in the cemetery near the church. Pallbearers were Frank Timian, Fred Brehmer, Gustav Timian, Henry Krueger, Wilbur Timian and Fred Koehn.
John, son of Nicholi and Margaret Backes, was born in Austria on December 30, 1871. He migrated to Canada in 1890 and five years later was married to Mary Gellner at Langerburg. In 1910 he moved with his family to Cavalier county, settling on a farm four miles north of Dresden where he had since made his home. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church.
Surviving with the widow are three sons, Ben and George of Dresden and John of Conklin, Mich.; and five daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Wendt of Walla Walla, Wash., Mrs. Richard Buchweitz and Mrs. Louis Backes [Note: the obit is wrong, this is a son, Louis] of Langdon, Mrs. Fred Butler of Alma, Mich., and Mrs. Rudolph Westphal of Dresden. Four children preceeded him in death.
