MRS JOHN BACKES SERVICES HELD
Funeral services were held Monday, September 30, at the Redeemer Lutheran church in Langdon for Mrs. John Backes, 81, of Devils Lake, former Waterloo township and Dresden resident who died September 27, 1957, at Devils Lake.
The Rev. E. N. Bartell officiated at the services and burial was in Emmanuel cemetery at Dresden. Pallbearers at the funeral were Erick Timian, Fred Koehn, George Timian, Arthur Timian, Albert Timian and Allan Brehmer.
Born Mary Gellner in Russia on August 15, 1876, she went to Saskatchewan about 1885. She came to near Loma in 1909 and was married to John Backes in February of 1894. They lived in Waterloo township and then in Dresden. Mr. Backes died in 1941. Mrs. Backes had been living in Devils Lake for three years.
Survivors include four sons, John of Coopersville, Mich., Louis of Osnabrock, Ben of Grafton and George of Alma, Mich.; four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Wendt of Walla Walla, Wash., Mrs. Richard Buchweitz of Langdon, Mrs. Louis F. Giles of Alma, Mich., and Mrs. Rudolph Westphal of Clyde; three brothers, Mike and Phil of Langdon and John in Idaho; 39 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
