LINDSAY — Harold "Jake" Bender, 86, of Madison died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at Countryside Home in Madison.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lindsay with the Rev. James Novotny officiating and burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cornlea. Visitation at the church will be 4-8:30 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and scripture service, and continue 9-10 a.m. Friday. Duesman Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bender was born June 26, 1924, in rural Lindsay to John A. and Elsie (Coldwell) Bender. He attended Platte County District Schools 42 and 54 and graduated from Humphrey High School, class of 1943.
He married Elaine L. Behrens May 3, 1949, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Lindsay. He lived in the Cornlea and Lindsay communities and since November 2004 was a resident of Countryside Home.
He farmed except for 10 years working for Behlen Manufacturing Co. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council of Lindsay and a past member of Lindsay Fire and Rescue Unit. He enjoyed hunting, attending farm auctions and restoring John Deere tractors. He also served on the Platte County Board of Supervisors from 1985-1989. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Margie (Bill) Hoffman of York; son Dale (Robertta) Bender of Cornlea; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers Vernon "Bud" Bender of Lindsay, Alvin "Bones" (Boots) Bender of Cornlea; and sister Marian Lloyd of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Elaine, who died July 10, 1954; sister Ethel Uchtman; brothers-in-law Harold Lloyd, Paul Uchtman; and sister-in-law Lori Bender.
Memorials are preferred to family or donor choice.
