Funeral services were held here at St. Francis Catholic Church on Saturday morning, Oct 12, for Mrs. John A. (Elsie) Bender, 79. Mrs. Bender passed away on Wednesday, Oct 9, 1974, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, NE after four weeks hospitalization.
Visitation was at the Duesman Funeral Home on Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. with the Christian Mothers rosary prayed at 3 p.m. and the Parish Rosary at 7:30p.m.
The Rev. Robert Rossbach of Lt. Louis, Mo. A cousin of the deceased, officiated at the 9:30a.m. funeral mass and at the graveside at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cornlea, NE. Pallbearers were grandsons John Uchtman, Kenneth Lloyd, Richard, Alan, Herb and Dale Bender.
The St. Francis Ladies Choir sang the Mass and the Christian Mothers Society, of which the deceased was a member, attended the services in a group.
Elsie Amelia Coldwell, daughter of Samuel Coldwell and Amelia Olmer Coldwell, was born December 8, 1894, at Ruthven, IA. She had lived with her parents in various parts of the country until she was in grade school and came with the family to the Humphrey, NE community where she received her education in the Humphrey St. Francis Schools.
On January 14, 1920 she was married to John A. Bender at St. Francis Catholic Church here. Following their marriage they farmed southeast of Cornlea until they retired in 1960 and moved to the acreage south of Humphrey. Mr. Bender passed away on February 23, 1968. She had resided at St. Joseph Home in West Point, NE for the past Four Years.
Survivors include two Daughters and three sons, Mrs. Paul (Ethel) Uchtman, Alvin and Harold of Humphrey. Mrs. Harold (Marian) Lloyd of Monroe, and Vernon of Lindsay; twenty grandchildren; six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Bender; her parents; one grandson; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Fredrica) Pfeifer, Mrs. William (Mae) Noonan; two brothers William and James Coldwell; one half-sister, Ms. Fred (Kathleen) Borneman and one half-brother, Ralph Coldwell.
