"Our little city was the scene of another killing on last Thursday when James Carver was shot and mortally wounded by his wife and died in a few minutes and never regained consciousness. The killing occurred about 6:30 o'clock at the home of the Carver's on Capt. WYC Hannum's farm near town. Carver's wife claims that he was beating and choking her and she had to kill him in self-defense and that she was sorry to have been compelled to do so. Other witnesses claim that the killing was premeditated and that it was a willful murder. Mrs. Carver immediately came to Maryville surrendering to the officers and her preliminary trial was held Monday and she was bound to court on a $2000 bond. The funeral of Carver was held Friday and burial took place in the Friend's graveyard here at Maryville. He was a man about 45 years of age. He had been married before and leaves three children by former marriages."
