NOTED COUNTY ENGINEER DIES AT ALLENDALE

Frederick Washburn of Suffern Built Up Tax Map in Ramapo, Did Tuxedo Work

Frederick Washburn, one of the best known citizens of Rockland and for many years engineer and surveyor in many communities, died yesterday at the Scott Nursing Home in Allendale after a lingering illness brought on by a heart condition. He was 78.

Mr. Washburn was a descendant of the family bearing that name who settled in the Stratford, Connecticut, area in the early 1600’s. His parents lived in Westchester County before coming here.

He was at one time engineer for the town of Ramapo, Tuxedo Park, and the villages of Suffern, Spring Valley, Hillburn, and Sloatsburg. Because of his intimate knowledge of properties in Ramapo, one of his outstanding achievements was the establishment of a tax map for the town of Ramapo, which included all parcels of land in that area. From 1888 to 1902 he directed the layout of the present Tuxedo Park area. He studied civil engineering at the Mountain Institute in Haverstraw.

In 1890, he married the late Cecilia Wylde of New City. They live at 24 Park Avenue, Suffern, where Mrs. Washburn died in 1919. In 1928, Mr. Washburn married Grace William of Monsey who did in 1943.

Born in Haverstraw

Mr. Washburn was born in Haverstraw March 21, 869 and was one of ten children of the tenth generation of Washburns. Until two years ago he remained active in his work as engineer for the village of Suffern.

He had been a member of Christ Church, Suffern, since 1904 and a warden of the church since 1931. He was also a member of Ramapo Lodge 589, F & A. M.

Surviving are one son, Clifford L., manager of the Hartford office of the Metropolitan Insurance Co., and a daughter, Frances E. Washburn of the American Brake Shoe Company; two brothers, George V. of Tallman and Robert of Hillburn, and two grandchildren, Donald F. and Clifford A. Jr., of Hartford.

Funeral services will be held at Christ Church in Suffern tomorrow at 2:30 p. m., the Rev. Fessenden Nichols officiating. Interment will be in the Mahwah cemetery.
