He married first to Joanna Hudson on 2 May 1751. He married second to Sarah Raynor on 4 December 1755. During the Revolutionary War, he served as Captain of the Morris County Militia's Eastern Battalion. He wrote a will on 7 September 1784 in Morris County, New Jersey, which was probated on 29 September 1784. He supported Princeton University when it was just starting with a gift of 3 pounds and he was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church for 15 years. His later descendants used the spelling of Lindley for their surname.
