The son of William Martin Sparks, Sr. and Nancy Tate of North Carolina, "Mart" married Frances Rebecca Burch on Christmas Eve 1875 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was a farmer.

Mart and Frances lived in Nebraska during the 1880's and 1890's before moving back to Monroe County by 1900. They were the parents of 9 children before their marriage ended sometime between 1900 and 1910.

After that, Frances made her home with one of the Sparks sons, Earl, and his family. They lived in Nodaway, Missouri and then moved to Hartford in Madison County, Illinois. Earl went on to become the mayor of Hartford.

On 22 Aug 1934, Frances fell from the porch of her home. She suffered a fractured skull and died of her injuries 9 days later. She was buried at Oakwood [aka Upper Alton] Cemetery in Alton, Madison County, Illinois.

Mart died 28 days after his 83rd birthday in Hartford, Illinois. He was buried on 12 Sep 1939.

SPARKS RITES

Burial rites for William Sparks were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the U. E. Sparks home on West Fourth street by the Rev. B. A. Bohn of the Baptist church.

The Rev. Bohn used the psalm "When they ring those golden bells", which was the favorite of Mr. Sparks, as the theme.

Pallbearers were six grandsons, Lester, Harley, J. D. Everett, all of Hartford, and Gerald and Ivan of Bedford, Ia. Mrs. Edward Scoggins and Miss Kathleen Stearns sang "In the Garden" and "Does Jesus Care".

The body was interred in the Wanda cemetery.

A son, Grover Sparks from Bedford, Ia., a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Sparks, and Gerald and Virgil Sparks arrived for the services.
