Herman Reed Hammer, 82, of Summer Shade, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at his residence.

He was born in Monroe County on March 30, 1928, to the late William Hammer and Locie Page Hammer. He was a member of the Church of Christ, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he received a Purple Heart. He was a retired saw mill worker, having worked at Anderson Lumber Company.

He is survived by his wife, Inell Bartley Hammer of Summer Shade; one son: Danny Hammer of Summer Shade; two daughters: Darlene Murphy of Tompkinsville, and Diane Turner of Tompkinsville; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Reggie and Dean Hammer of Beech Grove, Ind., Harley and Marcella Hammer of Beech Grove, Ind., and Leon and Patty Hammer of Glasgow; one sister and brother-in-law: Evelyn and Wallace Bowles of Louisville; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters-in-law: Glaydene Hammer, Nita Hammer and Maggie Hammer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Truman, Clyde, Sam and James Hammer; and a sister-in-law, Helen Hammer.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m. at Strode Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with burial in Old Mount Hermon Cemetery.
