WESTFIELD - Mrs. Ollie Rae Allen Merritt, age 76, of Westfield, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010 after several years of declining health. She was born October 22, 1933 in Forsyth County to the late George Nathaniel & Eunice Scott Allen. Mrs. Merritt was a former member of Francisco Presbyterian Church where she served as Moderator and Vice Moderator of the Presbyterian Women of the church as well as teaching Sunday School. In 1999 Rae was woman of the year for Francisco Fire & Rescue Squad. She was now a member of First United Methodist Church of Pilot Mountain. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Melvin E. Merritt of the home; daughters & sons-in-law: Suzan Merritt, Debra Wilmoth & husband Kenneth & Renee & husband Phill Bennett all of Danbury; grandchildren: Ronnie Rothrock, Lisa Heath, Steven Wilmoth, Melissa Wilmoth, Abrem Bennett & Ashley Bennett; eight great-grandchildren; sister: Ocea Merritt and many special nephews, nieces, cousins & dear friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Merritt was preceded in death by her son, Rodney Merritt; and brothers, Tom & Gurney Allen. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Pilot Mountain, conducted by the Rev. Jim Yow, the Rev. David Wyatt & the Rev. Tracy Collins with interment to follow at Francisco Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Mrs. Merritt will be placed in the Church one hour prior to the Service. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 30, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Howell-Nelson Funeral Service of Pilot Mountain. Memorials may be made to Walnut Cove Hospice, PO Box 863, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
