Gertrude Karoline Auguste Wirgau was born June 11, 1897, in Belknap Township, Presque Isle County, Michigan. She was the oldest of four children born to Theodor Friedrich and Ottilie Auguste (Nagel) Wirgau.

She was baptized at St Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belknap and on Palm Sunday, 1911, she made her confirmation vows in the same church.

At the age of 21 she was united in marriage with Herbert Hopp, son of Albert Charles and Olga Louise (Kreft) Hopp. They made their home in Detroit and the 1920 census shows them living at 921 Vinewood Avenue. Hebert was a professional fireman with the Detroit City Fire Department.

By the 1930 census, they had purchased their own home at 12636 Strasburg Ave and had six children, all daughters. In the next few years, four more children, including three sons, would be added to the family.

In retirement years Herbert and Gertrude made their home in East Point, Macomb County, Michigan.
