LORETTA A. BRUNING, 91, of Belknap Township died Thursday, January 18, at the Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City.

Loretta Wirgau was born September 2, 1904 in Rogers City. She was made a child of God through the Sacrament of Baptism October 1904 at St John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rogers City by the Rev. Joel David Druckenmiller. Loretta's godparents were Rudolph Streich, Amanda Jaeger, Louisa Poch. On May 4, 1919, she confirmed her baptismal vows at St Michael Lutheran Church in Belknap by the Rev. Wilhelm Schoenow. Loretta's memory verse for life is Pslam 27:1.

Interesting Note: In Loretta's baptismal records at St John Church in Rogers City her name is listed as "Loretta Louisa Amanda Wirgau"; however in in confirmation records at St Michael's her name is listed as "Loretta Alma Caroline Wirgau". It is now known why the name varies from the baptism and confirmation records.

She and Ernest Bruning, son of George and Wilhelmina (Schalk) Bruning, were married June 20, 1923 in Detroit. They made their home in Rogers City area for many years until moving to Cedarville in 1953. Following retirement in 1970 they returned to Belknap Township.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hillman, and also enjoyed playing Spitzer with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by
...her husband, Ernest in 1972;
...two sons,
......Walter in 1952 and
......Arlo Bruning, Sr. in 1993;
...a sister, Gertrude Hopp; and
...two brothers,
......Herbert Wirgau and
......Theodore Wirgau.

Friends called at the Bill Brietzke Funeral Home Saturday, January 20, where a prayer service was given that evening.

Funeral service was Sunday, January 21, at Faith Lutheran Church in Hillman with the Rev. Henry D. Gieschen officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
