He married Delilah (or Delia) Cummings around 1845 in NY. They had their first child, Mary Jane while still living in New York. Then they started their journey into the Midwest. By 1845 they were living in Le Roy,Boone, IL and later that same year in Chemung, McHenry, IL. In 1855, the Wisconsin state census recorded Dewitt as residing in Jefferson County, WI (probably near his sister, Lucretia Blodgett Cummings). They finally settled for a few years in Goodhue County, Minnesota near Red Wing and added several children to their family: Lucretia; Ellen Marie; Lucy Ann; Melissa Jeanette; and Alvah Dewitt. All these children are recorded on the 1860 Census. After this census there may have been a couple more children born.
By the time the 1865 Minnesota Census was taken, Delilah was deceased.
On 27 Dec 1866, Dewitt remarried Mary Jane Robinson, a woman who lost both parents while she was quite young. Together they lived in the Red Wing area and added to the family: Cora Adele; Joseph Daniel; Jennie Sophia; Mark Milton; Franklin Dayton; Edward David; Emma Jane; Sarah Mabel; and Walter Anson.
In 1880, the Blodgett family moved to Trimbelle, Pierce, Wisconsin and continued living there until the death of Dewitt in Jul 1890. Mary Jane remarried Albert Greeley a few years after Dewitt died.
