Dr. Phillip H. Best, 80, of Sullivan died 11 a.m. Wednesday (March 13, 1996) in the Naples Community Hospital, Naples, Fla.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the new Sullivan Elementary School Gymnasium with the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan in charge of arrangements. Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to time of service in the elementary school. Services were held Saturday in Hodges-Josberger Funeral Home, Marco Island, Fla. Memorials: United Parkinson Foundation, 833 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607 or donor's choice.

Born July 7, 1915, in Beardstown, he was a son of Bruce and Marjorie Bridgeman Best. He retired in December 1982 after more than 35 years as a general medical practice physician in Moultrie County. An active civic leader, he served as chairman of the Moultrie County Board from 1972 to 1976 and was a a past president of the Sullivan Chamber of Commerce and the Sullivan Country Club. In recognition of his many years of service to the community, a special appreciation day was held in his honor in September 1979.

An Eagle Scout as a boy, he continued to serve the Boy Scouts as a member of the executive committee of the Lincoln Trail Boy Scout Council from 1956 through 1972. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Methodist Church in Marco Island, Fla., the George A. Sentel Masonic Lodge 764 in Sullivan, the Bloomington Consistory, Ansar Shrine, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was also a charter member of the VFW chapter in Lexington, Ky., where he served as a U.S. Public Health Service physician. He was also a physician in the Coast Guard during World War II. He married Ruth Moritz on June 28, 1941 in Effingham.

Surviving are his wife; son, Phillip C. of Libertyville; daughter, Pamela Landers of Nisswa, Minn.; two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one infant sister.
