David was the son of William Vail and Jemima Cole. He was married in New Brunswick, New Jersey on 17 February 1816 to Elinor Bull Sullivan, the daughter of Edward Sullivan and Ann Bull. David was a merchant, and was the Mayor of New Brunswick in 1840. He and Elinor had nine known children (first six from Sullivan genealogy; last three from 1850 census):
*William Mitchell, b. 31 May 1818, m. Mary Odell, who died in 1899; they had a daughter, Alice Maude Vail.
*Edward Sullivan, b. 18 Dec 1819, d. 1 Jul 1889, and m. 28 Nov 1849 Kate Bedell, b. 1 Apr 1824, d. 5 Apr 1915. He and his wife lived in the historic Vail Mansion at the corner of Livingston Ave and Carroll Place in New Brunswick.
