ELLSWORTH - Elizabeth "Bette" M. (Hewitt) Ashmore went home to her Savior Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at her home that she loved so much, after a brief illness. Bette was born April 9, 1920, in the Franklin Baptist Church parsonage, where her mother played the piano and led the choir. She was the only daughter of Genevieve (Havey) Fernald and John Hewitt. She was lovingly raised by her stepfather, Jesse Fernald. Bette attended elementary school in Franklin and graduated from Franklin High School. She met her future husband at a dance in Lamoine when he arrived there in his Army uniform upon returning from Hawaii. It was love at first sight and they married June 22, 1940. Earl left for World War II shortly thereafter and didn't return until spring 1945. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage in June of this year.
Bette loved attending Maine Coast Baptist Church and singing the old hymns.
Bette is survived by her only daughter, Heather Linnehan and her husband, "my Johnny;" as well as two adored grandsons, Ryan and his wife, Stephanie, and Chadd and his wife, Jennifer. She was so proud when the great-grandchildren started arriving, Caleb and Tyler, Riley and Jacob, Bryanna and Kerigan, and finally little Kate from China. She was also very fond of her two cousins, Jylle (Clark) Wentworth and her husband, Jim, and Randy Clark of Hermon.
She was predeceased by her parents, an infant half brother and her husband of 69 years.
Private burial will be held at Bayview Cemetery, Franklin. (Bangor Daily News 8/28/2010)
