. Francis Marion Suiter (1839-1912) began his military service as a sergeant in Company B of the Second Iowa Infantry. The regiment distinguished itself in the battles at Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Corinth. In the fighting at Corinth, Mississippi, on October 3-4, 1862, Suiter suffered two wounds.

A brief in the October 20, 1862, edition of The Daily Gazette of Davenport, Iowa, details his injuries:

"Return of Lt. Suiter.-Lieutenant Frank M. Suiter, Of Co. B, 2d Iowa, arrived here on Saturday from Corinth, which place he left on Thursday. Lieut. S. has been reported slightly wounded, which was done on the first day of the recent battles. A more severe wound, which he received next day, has hitherto been unnoticed. This time the ball passed through the leg just below the knee, but happily breaking no bone. He is doing well, and yesterday went to his home, near LeClaire."

Suiter recovered, returned to the Second, and left the army in 1864 as a first lieutenant.
