One of the earliest settlers of Ash Grove township was Aunt Jane Bennett, who died at her home near Sexson Saturday morning, March 5. Death came to her as a welcome messenger after suffering from complication of diseases, consequent to old age, for many months. Lucretia Jane Oldridge was born in Grayson county KY., February 8th, 1831. She and a brother came to Illinois on horse back more than sixty years ago. On June 19, 1855 she was united in marriage with Austin Bennett and to them four children were born namely; Mrs. William Forbes of Ash Grove, Mrs. Frank Sexson of Mattoon, and Thomas Bennett, the last named have preceded the mother to the better land. Mrs. Bennett was stepmother to five viz: E. P. Bennett, Windsor; John Bennett, Brownstown; Mrs. Jasper Curry of Strasburg and David L. Bennett of Sexson. For many years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Forbes, who had tenderly and lovingly cared for the aged mother in her declining years. Besides the children named, she is survived by one brother, one sister, twenty-six grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. She united with the Christian church in Ash Grove in early life and lived a true and faithful Christian. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Cleming of Etna at the Ash Grove church at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Interment in church yard at that place. Shelbyville Democrat - 10 Mar 1910
