Rose Anne Murphy Pickett
15 February 1875 - 24 October 1946

Rose Anna was the second daughter and third child born to James and Roseanna Murphy, her brother John and sister Maggie were older, and her sisters Josephine and Frankie came next.

Rose Anna was born in Salem, New York, when her father was traveling as a tin peddler. A couple of years later, the family moved to Joplin, Missouri, where her father worked as a postmaster, and shortly thereafter moved to Empire City, Cherokee county, Kansas, where Rose and her siblings would grow up, and where James began mining, after once telling his wife "There'll be no more working for Uncle Sam--I'm going where they are making it quick".

Her father worked hard to establish his business in this "town" created out of the prairie by the lead and zinc mining boom. Her mother saw not only to homemaking, but also to the education of her children, and to their religious upbringing in the Catholic church.

Rose met and fell in love with a Galena, Kansas, young miner, Mitchell Jacob Pickett. Rose became a June bride on June 17, 1896, at her home in Empire City. And it would be in that same month of June that the couple began their family in 1900 with their daughter, named most appropriately, "June".

Following the birth of June, were the births of the other children: Margaret Frances in 1902, John Mitchell in 1907 (died at age 7 weeks), Mary Josephine "Jo" in 1908, Frank Lewis in 1912, and John Robb in 1914.

Rose kept her family close with love. Even though they would leave home as adults to live their lives, their house in Galena, Kansas, at 719 East Fifth, was a revolving door of visits, both short and long, of their children coming home. After the death of his parents, their son Frank would live in the home where he had grown up, with his wife and daughters. And his sisters would visit often the home of their childhood, bringing those whom they loved with them.

After her death, a beautiful stained glass window was donated to St. Patrick's church in Galena, Kansas, in memory of Roseanna and her sister Margaret Murphy Murdock. The window was displaced during a renovation of the church. In 2014, Roseanna's grandson, Robert Calhoun, arranged for the restoration of the window to the church.
