Death of Matthew Hale Smith
The Rev. Matthew Hale Smith died yesterday morning, at his reidence, No. 221 Ninth-street, Brooklyn, after an illness which confined him to bed during the last two weeks. Mr. Smith contracted a cold while marching with a Post of the Grand army of the Republic on Decoration Day, andd had been ailing all summer. Although an ordained clergyman, he had not been connected with any church in a ministerial capacity for a number of years. He devoted himself to newspaper correspondence and light literature. Under the nom de plume of "Burleigh," he corresponded with the Boston Journal, his letters usually being of a gossipy nature. He found time during Winter to lecture, and in the Summer he was a frequent exhorter at camp-meetings. When the campaign which has just closed opened, Mr. Smith took the stump for the Republican ticket. About two weeks ago he made a speech in one of the country towns of Kings County, and the following day, while in his office in New-York, he was seized with a chill. He was taken home, and did not recover. Mr. Smith was 63 years of age.
[NOTE: The Times gives his age as 63, but the city death record says 66.]
