George Melville Smith was born to noted writer and intellectual Mathew Hale Smith and Mary Burleigh Adams, a great-niece of President John Adams. He went by Melville throughout his life. In 1874 Melville married Anna Cora Deal in St Louis, but he spent most of his life in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Melville and Cora had three children: Mary Cora , who died at one year, and is buried with her father; Clifford Albert who drowned at fifteen and is buried in Newburyport; and Avery Chase, who lived a very long life and is buried in San Mateo, California. Melville's occupation is noted as clergyman and teacher.
