Mrs. Mary Catherine Creighton, widow of the late Judge James A. Creighton, for many years circuit judge in this county, died last night at the family residence, South Second street. She had been in failing health for some time and had been bedfast for the last two months. She gradually wasted away and the end was not unexpected.

The decedent was born Dec. 5, 1846, in Wabash county, where she obtained her early education. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Newman, and after her elementary schooling in Wabash county, she attended normal school at Bloomington.

After completing a course at the normal school the decedent taught school at Fairfield, where she became acquainted with James A. Creighton, who was at that time state's attorney of Wayne county. She was wedded to Judge Creighton, Jan. 1, 1871. The couple moved in 1887 to Springfield, where the late Judge Creighton entered into a law partnership with the late Alfred Orendorff, under the firm name of Orendorff & Creighton. Judge Creighton was elected circuit judge in 1884, a position which he held for thirty-two years and until the time of his death, Dec. 15, 1916.

Mrs. Creighton was a member of FIrst Methodist church of this city. She is survived by four children, Mrs. James W. Paige, and Mrs. Froman Smith, Chicago; Mrs. William St. John Wines, of this city, and John T. Creighton, formerly of the law firm of Brown, Hay & Creighton of this city now assistant trust officer of the National City bank of New York City. She also is survived by a brother, William T. Newman, Sumner, and two grandchildren, William Creighton Wines and Edna Frances Wines, children of Attorney and Mrs. William St. John Wines, of this city.

Funeral services will be held at the residence. Interment will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
