Bessie, born back of Milton on Kilgore Creek, was the daughter of Lindsey Franklin Bias and Alzada Peyton. She married Oliver "Ollie" LeGrand on 29 June 1904 in Huntington, West Virginia. They were the parents of 3 daughters; Pauline Laura, Alma Irene, and Loyis Alzada.
When her husband Ollie died in 1916 of cancer, Bessie was left to raise their daughters alone. She worked as a seamstress to support her family, holding them together during the depression.
Bessie was a kind and gentle person, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She passed away peacefully at her residence on Charleston Avenue in Huntington, WV from breast cancer. Her funeral was held at Beard Mortuary in Huntington.
