OBITUARY OF GERHARD A. (GEORGE) DUERKSEN
Gerhard A. (George) Duerksen was the 7th of 13 children, born on August 23, 1902 to Gerhard J. and Maria Woelk Duerksen of rural Hillsboro. He passed away January 11, 1989 at Bethesda Home in Goessel.
He was baptized by Rev. P. H. Unruh on Nay 23, 1920 and was a lifetime member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel. He graduated from Steinbach grade school, attended Goessel prepatory school, graduated from Hillsboro High School, attended Bethel College, and Salt City Business College at Hutchinson, Kansas.
On October 7, 1927 he was married to Mathilda Boese by Rev. D. H. Unruh. Theirs was the last wedding in the church before it was remodeled. Because of the early death of Mathilda's parents, her sister Linda (Mrs. Simon Schmidt) and brothers Alvin and Ralph Boese made their home with George and Mathilda. God also blessed them with a family of four children, Phyllis, Cora, LeRoy and Mary.
Georqe farmed for more than 40 years, practicing his belief of soil stewardship, that he should leave the soil better than he found it. He was one of the paid carpenters who helped remodel the Alexanderwohl Church. He was capable of mastering any skill or project that was interesting to him. He read an information book about electrical wiring, and wired many houses in the community when REA came in, starting with his own house. He was instrumental in starting the Goessel Crossroads Co-op, was on the board of directors and was one of the first to purchase from the Co-op. He was on the Green Valley school board where his children and one grandchild attended. He worked for several years at the Bethesda Horne in Goessel. He enjoyed teaching Sunday School classes of all ages, and always encouraged youth to get an education and to travel.
They spent a year at Prentiss, Mississippi in voluntary service, working on a junior college campus, as house parents and with dairy improvement from 1965-1966. After returning from Mississippi, they built a house in Goessel. They took several tours to Mexico and Canada, plus numerous trips to see children and grandchildren.
George went to Russia on a study tour in January of 1974; a grandson was also on the tour and they often shared stories of the trip. He always showed much love and concern for his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Mathilda, children Phyllis and her husband Paul Unruh, rural Hillsboro, Cora and her husband Romney Ketterman of Prairie Village, LeRoy and his wife Jane Duerksen of Hesston, and Mary and her husband Marlow Ediger of Kirksville, Missouri, 15 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. One sister Elsie Schmidt, Goessel and four brothers, Alvin of Newton, August, Ernest and Adolf, all of Goessel also survive him, as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
