"Erma Lee Mays was born August 12, 1933 to Minnie and Joe Ford, Sr. and was the third of four siblings. Erma confessed her faith at an early age at St. John College Heights Baptist Church and later united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. S. A. Davis. Erma, a long time resident of the St. John community, was a graduate of Austin Independent School District's L. C. Anderson High School where she served as a cheer-leader and a member of the 'Yellowjackets'. After high school, Erma graduated from Nurs-ing School and worked as a nurse for several years. Later, she was employed by the Austin State School for many years prior to her join-ing the family business, Sam's Barbecue. On June 14, 1952, Erma married Dan Mays, Sr. and to this union six children were born: Dan Mays, Jr., Brian Mays, Sr., Waunda Mays, Veronica A. Mays, Karen Mays, and Willie Mays, Sr. While she will be joining both par-ents one brother, Joe Ford, Sr., one sister, Vivian, and two daughters, Waunda and Veronica, Erma leaves to mourn her loss three sons, Dan Mays, Jr., Brian Mays, Sr., Willie Mays, Sr.; one daughter, Karen Mays; one sister, Juanita Hornsby; twenty grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends."
