Lyricist. An Irish Republican, he wrote numerous Irish songs. In 1907, he wrote the words for "The Soldier's Song" ("Amhrán na bhFiann") which became the national anthem of the Irish Republic in 1926. In later life was reduced to becoming an odd-job man and house-painter. He was the uncle of several Irish writers including Brendan Behan, Dominic Behan, and Brian Behan; each were poets, short story writers, novelists, lyricist or playwrights.
