Born in Ohio, he came to Spokane in 1900 with his parents, Wallace and Barbara Reidinger Winkler, who settled on a farm at what is now Fairchild Air Force Base.
Mr. Winkler started to work in the cement contracting business in 1916, and in 1919 founded his concrete and road construction company, William Winkler Co. He was president of the company 66 years. The Winkler business stamp is on hundreds of miles of concrete sidewalks and curbs poured in Spokane.
He was the first president of the Cement Contractors Association of Spokane.
Mr. Winkler was a member of Knights of Columbus and was a 4th Degree Knight. He also was a life member of the International Footprint Association and the Spokane Elks Lodge 228 and a member of the Spokane Police Guild.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alice Caplice Winkler; three sons, John, Robert P. and William "Jim" Winkler, all of Spokane; eight daughters, Gretchen (John) Curalli, Martha (Harold) Klunder, Heleene (Lawrence) Murphy, Marjorie (Theodore) Schultz and Connie Winkler, all of Spokane, Barbara (Ronald) Davey of Glendale, Calif., Mary (John) Johnson of Mullan, Idaho, and Carolyn (Loren) Vorhies of Fairbanks, Alaska; 29 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
