William Lee Straight was the son of Jacob C. and Jane Musgrave Straight. He was born on a farm on Paw Paw Creek. He was enlisted at age 23, as a corporal, on 4 MAY 1863, in Lewis County VA, by Capt. Dudley Evans, to serve in his company of VA Voluteer Cavalry, which became the Confederacy's Co. A, 20th Regiment VA Cavalry. He was promoted to sergeant in the same unit, in Col. W. L. Jackson's Brigade beginning 14 AUG 1863 (organization date). He was captured by General Sheridan at Smithfield/Prythfield VA, on 28 AUG 1864, and "sent to Washington D. C." the next day. He was released from Harpers Ferry VA on 2 SEP 1864, and sent to Camp Chase OH, then held as a prisoner of war there until 25 MAR 1865, when he was transferred to Point Lookout MD. He was released on 3 JUN 1865.

William Lee Straight married Mary Ice, daughter of William Bayles and Dorothy Straight Ice, on 3 JUL 1866 in Marion County WV. They had twelve children: Jennie Straight, David Bayles Straight, Thomas Cramer Straight, Sallie Straight (died as infant), Charles William Straight, Jacob Frederick Sraight, Mary Lucy Straight Stiles, Augusta Hellen Straight, Dorothy "Dolly" Straight, Rose C. Straight Kelley, Ruhama Straight Koon, and John E. Straight (died as a child).
