Tommy was born in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, the son of Charles Gillon and Agnes Hay. When a youth, he was taught to play the violin by his father, who directed a little orchestra that played the Holiday Boats, up and down the Clyde, in the summer time. One of these boats was the famous "P.S. Waverley." In 1923, Tommy, at age 15, immigrated to America with his father and brother, traveling aboard "The Orca." They left from Southampton, England and arrived at NYC November 1, 1923. The three of them lived in Detroit for 2 years and then mother Agnes and sister Peggy joined them there.

Tommy married Agnes Burns, daughter of David Pate and Mary Lindsay, June 28, 1940, in Los Angeles. Although the rest of the Gillons lived in Michigan, Tommy and Agnes loved California and chose to live most of their days there. They had no children. His burial information:
