Charles was the son of John Gillon and Margaret Quin of Glasgow. Charles was the husband of Agnes Galbraith Hay and the father of 7 children. Back in Clydebank, Scotland, he was a baker when he married Agnes, and later worked for both John Brown Ship Builders and Singer Sewing Machine. He was a musician, playing the piano, and taught his sons to play. During the summer he played the "Holiday Boats" that traveled up and down the Clyde River. (See additional photos at right) He immigrated in 1922 with his two sons, Charlie and Tommy, and his wife Agnes and daughter Peggy joined him in Detroit two years later. He came to America to work for Henry Ford Motor Co., because Ford's was paying $5 a day. He left one son and his family behind in Clydebank.
