Peter was the son of Christian "The Pioneer" Lauffer and Susanna Best. He married Magdalena Susanna Grosher in 1775.

Peter was a shoemaker. Because he was too short in stature to carry a musket, Peter made shoes for George Washington's army during the Revolutionary War.

When his father, sisters and brothers emigrated to Westmoreland County, only Peter remained in Northampton County. It has been said that he married a wife who refused to cross the Mountains.
