Born in Pomerania to Carl Loper and Carolena Pfeifer, she came to America in 1878 with her soon to be husband and family. Their daughter Augusta was born on the boat. After they arrived in Philadelphia, they came to Atlantic, Iowa. They lived here a short while before they moved to Hamlin, Iowa. After Bertha's father in law and daughter Augusta died in Iowa, the whole family moved to York County, Nebraska where she lived out the remainder of her life. She had brothers and sisters that immigrated from Pomerania and migrated to Montcalm, Michigan.
