The son of Jeremiah & Elizabeth (Carmen) Ziegler, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He and stood 5' 8" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted as a substitute for draftee Michael Lawns October 4, 1864, mustered into federal service at Carlisle that same day as a private Co. B, 56th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 1, 1865.

He married Mary Jane Snyder and fathered Jeremiah Franklin (b. 07/17/68), Sarah Lillian (b. 02/28/70), James Murray (b. 07/30/72), and Florence Virginia (b. 03/17/75). In 1890, he lived in Hopewell Township, York County, but died in Loganville from a "fracture of hip caused by a fall" leading to "dry gangrene of both feet."
