George was the second of seven children born to Benjamin Titus and Ellen Lois (Stowe) Roberts. He attended the University of Rochester, earning a B.A. in 1873. After graduation George went to teach in Argentina where he met and married Miss Anna Ackley Rice on Valentine's Day 1875.

The couple returned to the United States by 1878 and settled in Bradford, McKean Co., Pennsylvania where their only son was born. George's occupation in 1880 was listed as oil producer. Anna passed away in Pennsylvania.

George married for a second time 04 Jan 1888 in Wilcox, Elk Co., Pennsylvania to a girl eight years his junior, Winifred Murphy. They moved by 1895 to Pittsburg where they boarded in hotels while George practiced law. No children were born to George and Winifred.
