Some say she:

Only her name Elizabeth Osborne is certain....beyond that...

She is most likely NOT:
Elizabeth (Howard) Wells
(daughter of Joshua Howard and Joanna O'Carroll)

Her name may be any of the following:
MOST LIKELY:
Elizabeth Hannah (Howard) Osborne

BUT ALSO REFERRED TO AS:
Elizabeth Melvina (Howard) Osborne
Elizabeth Betty Howard
NOT LIKELY:
Elizabeth Hannah (Wells) Osborne
Elizabeth Melvina (Wells) Osborne

Anyone researching this person will understand that this is the gravesite/memorial for the wife of Ephraim Osborne, Sr. (c. abt 1723 - aft 1794)

Also anyone with documentation is especially welcome to contact me. I remain open to suggestions and discussion.

Her parentage, maiden name, dates, and middle names are very debatable.

At least half a dozen different sets of parents are listed for her. Including the maiden names of Howard and Wells.

Very few researchers have her middle name as Melvina. But it is here as a reference. The New River Notes site shows it as Hannah.

BTW - I would especially like to communicate with anyone who was there at the time of her conception, birth, etc.

SUGGESTION made by Find-A-Grave member "Nancy" (#49296400):
I can help clear up some of the mystery about her. My 5th gr. grandmother was Elizabeth Howard b 4/27/1714 in Baltimore Maryland and died there in 1785. She was the daughter of Joshua Howard and Joanna O'Carroll. She married my 5 gr. grandfather Thomas Wells 1710-1804 of Baltimore, son of James Wells 1685-1771. She lived her entire life in Baltimore.

So this Elizabeth IS NOT Elizabeth Howard Wells.

I've seen her name before when I'm working on my family tree and your Elizabeth was born in Virginia so maybe that will help locate her parents.
I don't know what the remark about Cherokee ancestry meant but my DNA has no Native American. My Elizabeth came from a long line of English ancestry as do I.
I hope you will correct your Elizabeth by taking off my grandma's DOB and the remarks that she's a Elizabeth Howard Wells. Thanks.

SUGGESTION made by Find-A-Grave member Astrid (#47522791):
I suggest that there were two different women of very similar names (who were related). First, Elizabeth Hannah (Howard) Osborn, wife of Ephraim Osborn. dau of John and Elizabeth Gassaway Howard, cousin to Elizabeth Howard Wells, BIRTH 21 AUG 1723 • Williamsburg, Independent Cities, Virginia, United States DEATH 1796 • Independence, Grayson, Virginia, USA and

Second (see other notes-she is not this Elizabeth (Howard) Wells, ELIZABETH (HOWARD) Wells, wife of Thomas Wells, dau of Joshua and Joanna O'Carroll Howard, BIRTH 27 APR 1714 • Garrison Forest, Baltimore, Maryland DEATH 1785 • St Thomas,Baltimore,Maryland,USA

Elizabeth Osborne mystery b: 1723-6 Grayson, Virginia.) I can tell you that she is DNA haplogroup T2. Which is traditionally a European Haplotype. However, new science is emerging to show that the Cherokee often carry this female mtDNA. First let me start by saying this was a very well documented line before someone started meddling with it. Elizabeth Melvina Wells Howard is buried at williamsburg to my knowledge, the Howard's are old English aristocracy in the old Peerage books, some stuff is on Ancestry, she is the wife of Ephraim Osborne Sr, also of Williamsburg, the old Fort Cemetery has several unmarked graves, several Osborne family members in it, their son Captain Enoch Osborne did marry a Cherokee Chief's daughter, this is a highly documented fact, and no T is a Cherokee Indian only Haplogroup, this is documented and is online. Since most of the graves are unmarked, it is sheer speculation to try and figure it out, Osbornes Indians, allied families and in-laws. Elizabeth Melvina Wells Howard, daughter of John Howard & Elizabeth Gassaway. DNA proven. Elizabeth Howard & Ephraim Washington Osborne have DAR/SAR applications. Please read. Elizabeth Howard's family line comes out of Maryland. I am her 6th GG Granddaughter.

It was my understanding that Lt. Ephraim Osborne married Elizabeth (probably Howard) and Quaker Caleb Osborne married Hannah (probably Howard). Two different women, possibly relatives.

**I accept any suggestions to add to this biography because I am sure that we are all trying to achieve the same goal.
